Another Look at What is Cloud Computing
Saturday, December 13, 2008 by Brian Wolff
In a recent post, George Reese provided his definition whether something is or isn’t a Cloud Computing service.
  1. The service is accessible via a web browser (non-proprietary) or web services API.
  2. There is zero capital expenditure required to get started.
  3. ou pay only for what you use as you use it.
To his definition I added my own thoughts:
  1. Not my data center (or closet) - This is same as Enterprise Colocation but the point is, I don't worry about the power, cooling, or redundancy.
  2. Not my hardware - Raising capital expenditure vs operating expenditure discussion
  3. Not my people - At both the infrastructure or application level (SaaS or IaaS -(Infrastructure-as-a-Service)).
  4. Not my software - Paying for all software; operating systems and virtualization software on a monthly basis, but I don't really "own" it.
  5. Not my Pager - At 3 AM when the hardware fails.
What would you add to the list?
