What is Cloud Computing - Beyond the Buzz Words

In the ongoing discussion around “What is Cloud Computing” Jeff Kaplan of ThinkIt Services offers this definition:

In my case, I view cloud computing as a broad array of web-based services aimed at allowing users to obtain a wide range of functional capabilities on a 'pay-as-you-go' basis that previously required tremendous hardware/software investments and professional skills to acquire.

Cloud computing is the realization of the earlier ideals of utility computing without the technical complexities or complicated deployment worries. With this precept in mind, I see SaaS as a subset or segment of the cloud computing market.

I was pleased to see he saw a difference between self-service clouds and a full service” cloud complete with the managed services.  With the support of knowledgeable advisors the value proposition of a subscription based service where you only pay for what you need gives you the ability to more tightly match SaaS revenue with Infrastructure expense.

He goes on to discuss the rush of companies entering the market, some with less then adequate products.  This is where he believes the industry needs to be focusing attention.

Instead of arguing over terminology, he believes we will win long-term success by properly educating our customers and successfully satisfying their needs.
At BlueLock, we completely agree with the importance of educating business owners, and managers about the benefits of Cloud Computing leveraging the use of virtual servers.   That is one of the main reasons we are sponsoring Cloud Camp in Indianapolis on January 28th, 2009.
