The Eviction

I was extremely disturbed by a recent story about how a rent dispute between a web hosting firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan and their landlord resulting in a surprise eviction.   This was a situation in which there was no winner; not the building owner, tenant, and especially not the clients of the tenant.  Regardless of whom was right, the actions of the web company not only put their business at risk, but that of their clients.

In today’s fast-pace world, there are few second chances. A denial of service, which lasts two business days, is a critical situation no business should have to deal with.   As companies of all sizes consider letting go of infrastructure and relying on external cloud computing, or even traditional managed hosting services, the success of the transition will depend heavily on finding partners they can trust.

As companies consider a move to Cloud Computing, there are a number of important questions which should be asked.  Before you hand over your data and processes be sure you know about the financial stability of the data center host, their compliance with security protocols (such as a SAS 70 certification), second facility for possible geographic replication, accessibility options, and levels of support.
